Herbagus Unggul Kawiriaan is a law graduate and emerging legal researcher specializing in international law, climate justice, human rights, and sustainability governance. A graduate of Universitas Gadjah Mada with a concentration in International Law, he has developed interdisciplinary expertise through academic research, international cooperation projects, and policy advocacy initiatives focused on environmental governance and social justice. Herbagus has accumulated extensive experience across research institutes, advocacy organizations, and legal practice. He currently serves as a Legal Analyst at Whitestone Legislative Advocacy, where he contributes to shadow reports, legal briefs, and compliance assessments submitted to United Nations treaty bodies, including CEDAW. His work involves monitoring developments in international law, analysing multilateral governance frameworks, and supporting policy engagement related to corporate governance and human rights at the UN level.
His research background includes roles with The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, Sichuan University, and collaborative sustainability projects between the University of Agder and Universitas Gadjah Mada. Through these experiences, he has conducted qualitative legal and policy analysis on climate financing, energy transition governance, circular economy practices, and comparative governance systems.
Herbagus is also an accomplished scholar and writer. He is the lead author of a forthcoming book chapter to be published by Palgrave Macmillan on climate justice for women and persons with disabilities in ASEAN countries, and co-author of an upcoming Springer publication on energy justice litigation. His work has earned recognition in national and international policy competitions, including ASEAN-focused initiatives supported by leading regional and international institutions.
